Elastic or plastic joint? Here's how

The ideal joint depth depends on whether an elastic or a plastic sealant is used.

Joint dimensioning

To give the joint a long service life and reduce the risk of damage, there must be a suitable ratio between its width and depth. The aim is to keep the tensile and compressive forces in the sealant itself, not in the bond faces, which are always the critical point.

A joint's depth always refers to its thinnest point.

Joint depth

Plastic sealants

Depth = Width / 5 + 8 (±2 mm)

As a rule of thumb, the joint should be as deep as it is wide.

Elastic sealants

For joints ≤ 20 mm: Depth = Width / 5 + 5 (±2 mm)

For joints > 20 mm: Depth = Width / 5 + 4 (±2 mm)

As a rule of thumb, the joint should be half as deep as it is wide.
